Waste potentially contaminated with the Ebola virus disease is not considered regulated medical waste. The waste stream has more stringent requirements for packaging, transporting and disposal.
Advant-EDGE Solutions of Middle Atlantic, Inc. has party status for Special Permit 16279. This is the permit that authorizes the proper packaging and transportation of waste potentially contaminated with the Ebola virus disease.
Regulated medical waste is a Category B infectious substance while Ebola contaminated waste is considered a Category A infectious substance.
The difference is that a Category B infectious substance contains a pathogen that is not in a form that is generally capable of causing permanent disability or a life threatening and potentially fatal disease in otherwise healthy humans or animals.
Category A infectious substances are materials known or reasonably expected to contain a pathogen, such as Ebola, that is in a form capable of causing permanent disability or a life threatening and potentially fatal disease in otherwise healthy humans or animals when exposed to it.
Regulated medical waste is shipped as UN 3291, Regulated Medical Waste, 6.2, PGII.
Ebola contaminated waste is shipped as UN 2814, Infectious Substance Affecting Humans (Ebola), 6.2. The packing group would be determined on the permit. The Special Permit 16279 specified the acceptable packaging.
The packaging is different from regulated medical waste. We can provide a guidance document issued by the US DOT for our customers. This document should be reviewed carefully. Please keep in mind the bags can not weigh more than 22 pounds containing category an infectious substances.
We are able to provide the training required for shipping waste potentially contaminated with the Ebola Virus disease.
